New scholarship ties with Latin America

Germany has signed scholarship and joint-research agreements with Chile and Brazil this week as part of an expansion of educational ties with South America.

Governments in Latin America are increasing investments in schools, universities and research institutions in order to train people urgently needed for further economic development. In this regard, they are becoming more interested in expanding academic exchanges with Germany, according to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). That’s why the president of the service, Stefan Hormuth, has this week signed educational exchange and research agreements with officials in Chile and in Brazil aimed at intensifying educational ties with Germany.
Under the first agreement, signed in Santiago de Chile on Monday, 500 Chilean graduates will be awarded scholarships to come to Germany over the next five years to study for Masters degrees or doctorates. This represents a threefold increase in the number of Chileans currently studying in Germany under DAAD programs.
The scholarships will be funded jointly by Germany and Chile.Another agreement signed in São Paulo, Brazil, will result in double graduate and post-graduate degrees for German and Brazilian students. An expansion of joint university research projects is also being planned. The new contract will allow more than 2000 German and Brazilian scholars and researchers to study and work in the respective partner countries each year.
