Grant for PhD Candidates, Norwegian Research Council and DION, Norway
Information about the grantIn Collaboration with the Norwegian Research Council, DION (The interest organization for doctoral candidates at NTNU) and NTNU Technology Transfer, do NTNU Entrepreneurship Center give a total of six grants for PhD. candidates with product ideas in relation to their PhD. thesis.
With this grant the Norwegian Research Council wants to stimulate the process of bringing the goodideas out to the market. Those receiving the grant will get funding and guidance to help them explore the potential of their product idea. This will be done through writing a business plan which include central areas such as the market potential, further product development and needs for financing.
Purpose; motivate and to learn how to commercialize research.
With this grant the Norwegian Research Council wants to focus on and to contribute to commercialization of new technology, and this is why we give PhD. candidates this grant of 15 000NOK. Those who receive the grant will get an opportunity to explore the market potential and need forfurther development and financing. The amount is based on two weeks salary and what’s left after direct cost or hired help is taxed as ordinary salary.
Important: Application for this grant is not to be mistaken as reporting ideas to the NTNU Technology Transfer Office, TTO. We will only encourage those who should report to the TTO, to do so. It is there fore not necessary to inform the TTO in advance of this application. The Grant is to be considered as an education opportunity with a mentor. It is scheduled several meetings between the receivers of the grant, and the entire grant period is finished with a presentation of the project and awards, where investors and other persons from the entrepreneurial community in Trondheim are present. All information is kept confidential.
There will be a “ceremony” for handing over the grants on Wednesday the 28th of January. There will be served cake and coffee. Part of the program is information about opportunities and available reassures for persons with ideas. After the ceremony there will be an information meeting for those who are awarded the grant. There will be arranged lectures as a help for those ho who receive the grant, related to developing a business plan. There will also be a written feed back on based on the meetings with the mentor in advance of the final deadline. The goal is that you during the grant period work out a business plan and in this process learn more about, how to commercialize research results. We can also put you in contact with students with knowledge on marked analysis.
An individual agreement will be made with everybody who receives the grant before it is awarded. Thisagreement will state the need for help, obligations and demands for accomplishment. The grant is paid out after the award for best business plan in June 2009.
Deadline 22th of January
Send an application by 22th of January; to magnus.hakvag@iot.ntnu.no. The application should include a short summary of the product idea, why it might have a business potential and the ones involved (included the student’s advisor). We also want to know your motivation for applying for the grant.

Competition
In addition to the grant, there is also an element of contest to stimulate and encourage. It is put aside an award 20 000 NOK for the best business plane produced during the grant period.
NTNU Entrepreneurship Center
NTNU Entrepreneurship Center (NEC) is part of the institute of industrial economics and technologymanagement at NTNU. In addition to research and education, NEC manages programs as Venture Cup,Take-Off and this grant. In addition to be an accelerator for new businesses, these activities are important arenas for practical and interdisciplinary cooperation for students
