A new EPSRC funded Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in Chemical Synthesis has been launched at the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol. The Centre has a bold vision to train a new generation of researchers for the UK chemical industry and academe. Graduates of the Centre will be outstanding practitioners of Chemical Synthesis and will be equipped with enhanced team-working and problem-solving skills that will enable them to address successfully the full range of molecular based problems of the future, thus enabling the UK to build upon its competitive position as the place for highly innovative, creative and IP generating research. As the Centre has attracted much additional funding from leading UK Pharmaceutical & Fine Chemical industries, there is the opportunity for these PhD studentships to be further augmented with industrial placements and bespoke education and training.
Studentships are 4-years duration, involving an innovative, e-learning structure in the first year, enabling students to gain experience in various areas of synthesis before specific PhD projects and supervisors are selected.
Applications are welcomed from UK/EU students with, or expecting to gain, a first or upper second class honours MSci/MChem degree (or equivalent). Interests in areas of modern Chemical Synthesis such as: organic & inorganic methodology; natural product & target molecule synthesis; organometallics; catalysis; asymmetric synthesis will be expected. Additionally applications from candidates with interests in enabling and supporting areas such as: spectroscopy; labelling; crystallography; mechanism & kinetics; physical chemistry; photochemistry; computational chemistry; biosynthesis; carbohydrates; molecular & chemical biology would also be welcomed.
Information Packs for the DTC and PhD studentships in all branches of chemistry, beginning in October 2009, can be found at: www.chm.bris.ac.uk/gradschool/form.htmFunding information
