Scholarships from Riken Center for Developmental Biology 2009, Japan

RIKEN CDB and Graduate School of Science, Kobe University will inaugurate RIKEN-Kobe University International School in October 2009. Its main purpose is to offer foreign students an opportunity to enroll in the doctoral program at Kobe University, under the supervision of CDB scientists who hold concurrent positions as visiting faculty at Kobe University. RIKEN will partially provide student living costs under the International Program Associate (IPA) program.
Students that complete this International Graduate School Program will be awarded a doctoral degree by Kobe University, after approval of his/her thesis.
Eligibility
Applicants must satisfy all of the conditions below:
1- In principle, applicants must be a foreign national under the age of 35.
2- Applicants must have a master's degree and a school education of a minimum of 16 years, or hold an academic qualification equivalent to a master's degree awarded outside Japan, when they enroll to the graduate school.

Support
  • A daily living allowance of 5,200 yen per day.
  • A housing allowance of up to 70,000 yen per month. (The IPA must pay his or her own utility costs.)
  • Roundtrip transportation between RIKEN and the IPA's home country.
  • Other provisions in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
  • In principle, the IPA program is limited to a maximum of 3 years.

Application and Selection: successful applicants will be selected based on the following three processes:

  1. Consultation for application with the CDB scientist, who is a visiting faculty member of Kobe University, before applying to the program (generally 1-2 months ahead of the deadline)>> List of CDB scientists who are visiting faculty at Kobe University
  2. Application screening by the review-committee organized by CDB Kobe University visiting faculty

  1. Research proposal for IPA (use designated form) (Word)
  2. Agreement (use designated form) (PDF)
  3. Curriculum vitae with photo
  4. Degree certificate or evidence of expected degree to be awarded
  5. Official academic transcripts (both graduate and undergraduate)
  6. Summary of your master’s thesis or your master’s course research
  7. Letters of recommendation from two people who can verify the potential of the applicant
  8. Health certificate

Enrollment in October, 2009 : January 22, 2009
Enrollment in April, 2010 : July 31, 2009
