MARES Project: PhD Studentship in Islamic Maritime traditions of the Red Sea and the Arabian and/or Persian Gulf, Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies, University of Exeter
The Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies is offering one full-time three-year PhD studentship to start in October 2009.
Applicants are invited for a doctoral research studentship in the discipline of Maritime Ethnography or Islamic Archaeology or Islamic History. The doctoral student will be joining a collaborative project funded by a generous grant from the Golden Web Foundation. She/he will be expected to undertake research work with Professor Dionisius A. Agius in the research project entitled MARES - a multidisciplinary, multi-period project focusing on the maritime traditions of the peoples of the Red Sea and Arabian or Persian Gulf.
Candidates should have a good honours degree and a Masters degree in a relevant subject (anthropology, ethnography, history, archaeology). Knowledge of Classical Arabic and Spoken Arabic and/or Classical and Modern Persian is desirable.Successful candidates receive a stipend plus tuition fees (provision for fieldwork and research expenses will be made to cover the costs of travel to and from the UK relating to this project).
