Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) Scholarships, Germany

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) with its unique museums, libraries and archives, is one of the largest and most varied cultural and scholarly institutions in Germany and the world. The sources of the tradition entrusted to it are preserved, added to, made accessible and researched in the Berlin State Museums (SMB), the Berlin State Library (SBB), the Privy State Archives (GStA PK), the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) and the State Institute of Music Research (SIM).

The scholarship programme of the SPK enables scholars from all over the world to undertake one-month to three-month research and work residencies at the institutions of the SPK in Berlin. The scholarships are primarily intended to enable foreign scholars to work at the museums, libraries and archives of the SPK, to participate in scholarly and cultural life with the SPK and in Berlin, and to make professional contacts with employees of the SPK and of other institutions in Germany.

The application for a scholarship must be made for the first half-year of a year by 30 September of the previous year, and for the second half year, by 30 March of the same year. The application is made directly to the director of the institution where a residency is sought: the Director General of the State Museums or the State Library, or to the Director of the GStA PK, the IAI or the SIM.

2009 African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship International Development Research Center

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in partnership with the InternationalDevelopment Research Center (IDRC) are pleased to announce the second call of the African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowships (ADDRF). The 2009 ADDRF seeks to facilitate more rigorous engagement of doctoral students in research, strengthen their research skills, and provide the fellowsan opportunity for timely completion of their doctoral training. The fellowship targets doctoral studentswith strong commitment to a career in training and/or research. ADDRF’s overall goal is to supportthe training and retention of highly-skilled, locally-trained scholars in research and academic positions across the region.

The ADDRF will award about 15 fellowships in 2009.

These fellowships will be awarded to doctoral students who are within two years of completing their thesis at an African university. Dissertation topics showing great promise of making significant contributions to efforts to strengthen health systems (governance, equity, health or population-related issues) in the region will be given priority.

Scholarships for Developing Countries - 2009 Journalists Fellowship Programme , New York, USA

The Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its 2009 Fellowship Programme.

The fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Fellowships will begin in mid-September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

The Fellowship Programme is open to journalists who are native to one of the developing countries in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, and are currently working full-time for a bona fide media organisation in a developing nation. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to international affairs and to conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their readers and audiences. They must also have approval from their media organisations to spend up to two months in New York to report from the United Nations.

The journalists who are awarded Fellowships are given the incomparable opportunity to observe international diplomatic deliberations at the United Nations, to make professional contacts that will serve them for many years to come, to interact with seasoned journalists from around the world, and to gain a broader perspective and understanding of matters of global concern.

Seminar on "The Global Economic Crisis: Impacts and Responses in Asia", USA

Each year the East-West Center invites rising young leaders from the United States and Asia Pacific to participate in The New Generation Seminar (NGS), a two-week intensive educational, dialogue and study tour travel program. The program is developed around a thematic focus and provides participants with an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of Asia Pacific-U.S. developments and challenges, build a regional network and to become leaders with a more international perspective. The first week of the program is held in Hawaii. In discussions with East-West Center researchers, other experts in the Hawaii community and one another, participants are introduced to key regional policy issues such as international relations, security, economics, population, health and environment. The second week involves field travel to either the United States or Asia Pacific for exploration of the program theme.

The world is facing what may be the first truly global economic crisis. The financial meltdown that began on Wall Street has become a crisis that reaches deep into the globally integrated financial and trading systems, posing very serious challenges for countries around the world. Asia’s vastly diverse economies have experienced the fallout in different ways, all of which are testing political, economic and social structures across the region.

The 19th New Generation Seminar will provide an opportunity for policy and decision-makers from Asia Pacific and the United States to develop a comprehensive perspective of how the financial crisis is affecting regional economies, how countries are responding nationally, and what countries are doing together. Participants will travel to Korea and Vietnam to compare the challenges and policy responses in two Asian countries representing different stages of economic development and different political systems. In Korea participants will examine how the crisis has affected a newly industrialized economy that has been one of Asia’s success stories since the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Vietnam offers a view of the impact on an emerging economy that has had the second highest growth rate in Asia for several years, but still remains a developing nation. Meetings and visits will expose participants to a wide range of perspectives from government, private sector, labor, academia, civil society and the media to better understand the causes, consequences and future implications of this unprecedented challenge to the global economy.

Who Can Apply

The New Generation Seminar involves 12-14 participants aged mid-20’s to late 30’s, approximately 8-10 from Asia Pacific and 4 from the United States. The program seeks to engage “communicators” and “leaders,” those individuals who are in a position to shape and influence policy and decision-making in their countries, regions or local communities. Primarily these leaders will be involved in political processes. Past participants have included members of national, state or provincial government assemblies or ministries, young mayors or governors, city council members, up and coming members of political parties, leaders of political party youth wings, political advisers and other elected officials. The NGS also includes leaders from civil society organizations, media, business and law. The program is geared toward professionals working outside of academia.

The strongest candidates for the program will be:

• Working professionals in their mid-20s to late 30s;
• Political and community leaders or communicators with broad-based policy knowledge and influence;
• Individuals with limited opportunity for international travel;
• Fluent in English.

Candidates need not be specialists in the program theme; indeed, as stated above, we prefer candidates with broad based policy profiles who could benefit from deepening their understanding of the current economic crisis.

UNFPA Fellowship: Special Youth Programme

The Special Youth Programme fellowship consists of an initial 4.5 months fellowship at UNFPA Headquarters, New York, followed - upon satisfactory performance - by a continued fellowship of another 4.5 months in the UNFPA Regional Office or Country Office in the region / country of the fellow. UNFPA is currently recruiting for a group of fellows to start their fellowships in April/May.

Objective

This programme is designed to give young people from developing countries opportunities to engage in policy development and programming; to help build the capacity of young people; and to sensitize both the young people and UNFPA staff on partnering to address adolescent and youth issues.

During the course of the programme, fellows will:

• Attend and participate in UNFPA and UN events and meetings as appropriate
• Undertake research and writing assignments
• Contribute to ongoing projects and programmes
• Organize a final presentation to UNFPA HQ staff on their projects and fellowships in Headquarters
• Interact with the New York local youth community on at least one occasion
• Develop a relationship with the Regional and Country Office and provide updates on their activities during the HQ fellowship
• Provide updates to HQ during fellowship at Regional or Country Office

In addition to development opportunities to experience working with a UN agency such as UNFPA, all qualified candidates will be provided the following:

Fellowship at UNAIDS Special Youth Programme

The UNAIDS Special Youth Programme seeks to recruit young people aged 20-24 from developing countries with some programme experience in HIV related issues to join UNAIDS for a 9-month remunerated fellowship. The fellowship is divided into two sections: an initial fellowship in UNAIDS Geneva, followed – upon satisfactory performance - by a continued fellowship in the UNAIDS country office (UCO) in the fellow’s country of origin.

The programme seeks to achieve the following objectives:

• To create opportunities at appropriate levels of the organization to engage youth in policy
  development and programming;
• To help build the capacity of young people and strengthen their leadership skills to contribute to the AIDS response, especially at the country level;
• To sensitize both the young people and UNAIDS staff on various modalities of working
  together to address issues related to HIV, particularly youth concerns, gender, GIPA and
  human rights.

1 . Responsiblities

• Under the shared supervision of the Programme Management Advisor, Evidence, Monitoring and
• Policy (EMP) and the relevant technical staff member in the team to which the fellow is assigned, the
• Fellow shall have the following responsibilities during his/her time at UNAIDS Geneva:
• Participate in ongoing UNAIDS projects or programmes related to young people and HIV
• Carry out various analyses in relation to HIV and young people ( eg. reviewing national strategic plans and Universal Access target reports in order to determine the level of funding and emphasis on activities for young people; developing a country level stakeholder mapping; developing a national youth profile report of his/her country)
• Liaise with the WHO and other cosponsors on issues related to HIV and young people and
  potentially contribute to projects in this area, both at global and country levels
• Carry out specific duties related to the technical unit in UNAIDS Geneva to which the fellow is assigned
• Carry out other activities/projects as assigned
• Specific activities at the country level will be agreed with the country level supervisor for the second part of the fellowship

2. Requirement

EDUCATION Secondary school and preferably University degree or equivalent professional training or self-study/work experience

EXPERIENCE One to three years experience working on HIV related issues and/or in the areas of development, advocacy, human rights, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health or similar. Experience working with an NGO is an advantage.

FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS General knowledge of and sensitivity to HIV. Analytical skills and ability to synthesize a wide range of information. Demonstrated research and writing skills.

LANGUAGES Fluency in English. Knowledge of another UN language an advantage.

The Chinese Government Scholarships - Xiamen University Scholarship, China

The Chinese Government Scholarship is a full scholarship set up by the Ministry of Education of China to enable foreign students to study in China. Who can apply for a scholarship?

The EU-funded scholarships are available for three types of Regional Asia nationals:

Target Group 1

Students and staff registered in one of the Asian universities that are a member of the consortium.

Target Group 2

Nationals of the third-countries concerned by the geographical lot, registered in a higher education institution of these countries not included in the partnership or having obtained in an institution of these countries a university degree or equivalent. This includes the possibility of providing mobility opportunities to third-country nationals working in public administration and public and private enterprises.

Target Group 3

Nationals of the third-countries concerned by the geographical lot who are in particularly vulnerable situations. It may cover mobility for students holding the nationality of one of the third-countries concerned and:
- having a refugee status or asylum beneficiaries (international or according to the national legislation of one of the European recipient countries) or
- it can be proved they have been the object of unjustified expulsion from university on racial, ethnic, religious, political, gender or sexual inclination or
- they belong to an indigenous population targeted by a specific national policy.

So if you belong to one of the three target groups mentioned above you can apply for a scholarship.

Valid Countries

Eligible Asian countries that are covered by the geographical lot are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Master’s Scholarships for Developing Country Students - Cardiff University, UK

The MSc International Planning and Development, Cardiff University, is offering one award for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, starting in September 2009. Candidates must be nationals of a Commonwealth developing country, should have a first class or high upper second degree, and professional experience of at least one year. A standard in English language of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent will be required from students whose first language is not English. Preference will be given to candidates from lower income countries.

In addition to the normal application requirements,

- Candidates must certify in writing that:

Scholarships from Riken Center for Developmental Biology 2009, Japan

RIKEN CDB and Graduate School of Science, Kobe University will inaugurate RIKEN-Kobe University International School in October 2009. Its main purpose is to offer foreign students an opportunity to enroll in the doctoral program at Kobe University, under the supervision of CDB scientists who hold concurrent positions as visiting faculty at Kobe University. RIKEN will partially provide student living costs under the International Program Associate (IPA) program.

Students that complete this International Graduate School Program will be awarded a doctoral degree by Kobe University, after approval of his/her thesis.

Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy all of the conditions below:
1- In principle, applicants must be a foreign national under the age of 35.
2- Applicants must have a master's degree and a school education of a minimum of 16 years, or hold an academic qualification equivalent to a master's degree awarded outside Japan, when they enroll to the graduate school.

Support

• A daily living allowance of 5,200 yen per day.
• A housing allowance of up to 70,000 yen per month. (The IPA must pay his or her own utility costs.)
• Roundtrip transportation between RIKEN and the IPA's home country.

Harvard Business School (HBS) Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP), USA

The Harvard Business School (HBS) Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP) is a one week management training program for rising college seniors designed to increase diversity and opportunity in business education.

A twenty-year tradition at HBS, this unique educational experience helps participants develop a broader understanding of the challenges business leaders face, the many dimensions of the business world, and the impact they can have on their community and the world through business leadership.

Using the renowned case method of instruction, HBS faculty lead class discussions on current management issues. Participants spend evenings analyzing real-business cases, and use morning study groups and classes to examine and debate their ideas through lively interaction with peers and faculty. This is the life of an MBA student at HBS. Theacademic program is supplemented by presentations from HBS administrators and alumni who provide information about the impact that an MBA degree can have on their lives and careers.

While attendance in SVMP does not guarantee admission to HBS, participants are encouraged to consider a graduate business degree after completing their undergraduate education. Commonwealth Professional Fellowships 2009, UK

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in 2009 will once again be providing funds for UK organisations to host visits from mid career professionals from the developing Commonwealth whose work is critical to the development of their home country. This will be the eighth year that the Scheme has operated with around sixty five awards now being offered each year to a variety of organisations including NGOs, professional membership bodies, local authorities, charities and voluntary organisations, as well as organisations within the central government and private sectors.

Commonwealth Professional Fellowships support programmes of professional development designed to have a catalytic effect in developing skills that will subsequently be applied in a developing Commonwealth country. Funding will be provided for programmes of typically three months duration, although requests for funding for shorter or longer programmes of up to six months will be considered in exceptional circumstances. Applications are being sought for programmes providing professional development opportunities to individuals in the broadly defined fields of education, engineering/science/technology, environment, governance, public health and agriculture/fisheries/forestry (this one is new for 2009).

Applicants should be capable of devising a coherent and relevant programme and of identifying suitable recipients through existing organisational networks. OFID will also pay for travel costs from the nearest airport to the student’s place of residence, to the nearest airport to the chosen place of study. Doctoral Scholarships Management, Economics and Social Sciences - University of Cologne, Germany

Cologne Graduate School (CGS) will constitute the integrated PhD program of the Faculty of Management, Economics, and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne.

Each year, a limited number of scholarships will be offered to the very best graduates in management, economics, and the social sciences. These so-called WiSo scholars will be recruited internationally across the three disciplines of the Faculty. The Graduate School will also provide the infrastructure for international doctoral exchange.

The course program will start in October 2009. During the first year, students will take part in courses on multidisciplinary methods and theories and subject-specific courses. During the second and third year, students mainly conduct research and work on their thesis. Students are encouraged to spend one term abroad.

The CGS is looking for excellent students who are close to finishing their Master’s degree (or German Diploma or equivalent) and who count among the top 10% of graduates in their faculty. The teaching language of the program is English.

Scholarships:

For excellent students with a Master’s degree (or German Diploma or equivalent), the CGS offers a limited number of scholarships (1,200 Euro per month). Danish Government OP15 Climate Master Scholarship, Denmark

Denmark offers a number of full scholarships within studies of climate change. Study climate change in Denmark - apply for a COP15 Climate Scholarship.

Climate change is one of the major challenges that our world faces today. In December 2009, Denmark will host the United Nations Climate Change Summit. To emphasise the importance of sustainable climate solutions, the Danish government is now launching the ‘COP15 Climate Scholarship’ for highly qualified students. The scholarships, which cover both tuition fees and living expenses, are made available for a range of excellent two-years Master’s programmes, including MSc programmes in wind energy, environmental engineering or sustainable energy planning.

Background
In line with the overall aim of securing a climate friendly Climate Conference, the Danish Government has decided not to give any gifts or conference-kits for COP15 participants. The resources saved is instead used to create the ‘COP15 Climate Scholarship’, which gives a number of international students the opportunity to pursue a masters degree within climate change studies at a university in Denmark.

UCL Faculty of Laws Research Scholarships, UK

For the academic year 2009-10 the UCL Faculty of Laws will be offering three prestigious Research Scholarships for graduate research students.

The position of UCL Faculty of Laws as a world-leading law school has recently been confirmed by its ranking in the UK government 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). UCL Laws is placed joint 1st in the UK for the proportion of its research activity in the top two categories. The Faculty has also been rated in the highest category in the UK for teaching (excellent). We value research not only in contributing to the quality of our teaching and the supervision we give our research students, but also in its contribution to the development of law and its influence on legal practice and public policy. The Faculty has 56 members of full-time academic staff, including 27 professors, and currently has some 55 MPhil/PhD students.

Synopsis: In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP) for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank.

This is an opportunity for Cambodian students and those who come from less developed countries to apply for World Bank Scholarships.

Awards & Scholarships. AIDS Vaccine 2009 will be accepting applications for New Investigator Awards and International Scholarships.

An abstract submission is required of all scholarship applicants.

Award Categories: International ScholarshipResearchers and clinicians (under the age of 35) who submit an abstract are eligible to apply for an International Scholarship. This scholarship will cover Conference registration fees, airfare, and accommodations.

New Investigator Awards: Graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and young faculty members (under the age of 35) are eligible to apply for one of five New Investigator Awards. These awards are restricted to presenting authors of accepted abstracts, and will be awarded to the highest scoring abstracts from eligible presenting authors. The New Investigator Awards will cover Conference registration fees, airfare, and accommodations. In addition, New Investigator Award winners will receive a cash price at the Conference.

Instructions: International Scholarship and New Investigator Award applications must be submitted via the online abstract submission site. Submitters will be prompted through the electronic submission process.

Submitters must provide the following information:

• An Applicant Statement (250 word maximum) describing the applicant’s career interests, the nature of his/her international collaborations, and the reasons for his/her interest in attending the Conference.
• Curriculum Vitae (three-page maximum). This document must be uploaded to the submission site.
• A recommendation letter verifying the applicant’s eligibility and merit from the applicant’s employer or from a collaborator. The letter should be written in 250 words or less on institutional letterhead. It should include the contact information for the recommending party. The document must be uploaded to the submission site.
• The award application will be accessible before the completion of the abstract submission.
