It has a strong internationalization programme and offers over 85 English Master programmes taught in English, as well as a number of Dutch and English language courses. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) should not be confused with Amsterdam's second university, the VU University. In 2006, the UvA joined the League of European Research Universities (LERU). The universities work together to invest in European 'centres of excellence', with the aim of maintaining Europe's strong position in the global knowledge economy.

History

The predecessor of the University of Amsterdam, the Athenaeum Illustre, was founded in Amsterdam in 1632 to educate students in Trade and Philosophy. Lessons were generally given at the professors' homes, as the establishment was not yet a proper university.

The Athenaeum remained a small institution until the nineteenth century, with no more than 250 students and eight teachers. The situation changed in 1877 when the Athenaeum Illustre became the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and was permitted to confer the highest educational degrees.

Years of rapid growth lay ahead. There were 900 students at the University of Amsterdam by 1900. This figure had risen to 2,500 by 1935, and to 7,500 by 1960. More fields of study and research were introduced, and new university departments were established.

Research

The University of Amsterdam has an outstanding reputation for research both at a national and an international level. The quality assessments carried out by formal evaluators, the UvA's success in national and international competitions for research funding, and the fact that the UvA is an respected partner in many collaborative international research projects all attest to the quality of its researchers. The University of Amsterdam is a member of the prestigious European League of Research Universities, which also includes the Universities of Leiden and Utrecht.

In recent years, the number of doctoral degrees conferred by the University of Amsterdam has risen to over 330 per year. The University's thriving doctoral programmes provide an excellent foundation for high-quality research and education.

The University of Amsterdam is a comprehensive, classical university, with an annual internal research budget of around € 80 million. In addition to this amount, faculty members and institutes are often successful in securing prestigious external grants, such as those awarded by the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research).
